The May development photographs concentrate almost entirely on the amazing progress that is being made in the development of the Water Park. Several key attractions can now
be seen taking shape and the pure scale of some of the rides can be appreciated. In addition to the water park there are several nice photographs of the beach area and a "spot the West Sands staff" picture!

Songkran Festival - Mai Khao Turtle Release

It's just been Thai New Year which is called the Songkran Festival . During this time there is a release of the turtles that use Mai Khao Beach as a nesting ground, it’s organized by the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation who patrol the beach during nesting time (October- November). After finding the eggs they then (with the help of Marine Biological centre) hatch the turtles and look after them until their shells become hard enough for them to survive in the wild. At New Year they are released. The survival rate in doing this is a lot higher than if the Turtles were left alone and this year a magnificent 30 Green Sea Turtles were released, including a seven year old that was washed ashore entangled in fishing nets last year. There was some damage to her front flippers but after careful nursing she was strong enough to return to the sea. It takes 20 years for a turtle to become of nesting age and numbers are diminishing. Organisations like the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation fully realise that every Turtle is precious and programs like this will go a long way to ensuring the survival of some of the oldest species on the planet.
I was lucky enough to be joined at the Turtle release by some of the property owners from West Sands, Mats & Rita from Sweden who were fortunate enough to release a Turtle and will no doubt be keeping a sharp eye out for her return from their beautiful Beach front Villa!

Environmental Day

The 12th of August, besides being Mothers Day and the Queens Birthday in Thailand was also Environmental Day on Mai Khao beach. The idea is that different groups from
within the local community sponsor a 3 metre by 3 metre plot of land in which trees indigenous to the area are then planted. The event was extremely well supported with over 700 trees being planted!
West Sands was well represented at the event, several staff members using their national holiday to go and do their bit for the environment. Although it must be said that some members of staff did a little more of the hard work than others (Mentioning no names, Barry!). A huge thank you goes to all the West Sands
staff who took the time to plant trees, helping to ensure that Mai Khao looks as spectacular in a hundred years as it does now.

Youth Of Thailand Boxing Championships 2008

West Sands General Manager Joe Mercer was present at the Youth of Thailand Boxing Championship finals in Bangkok on 10th July 08 to see three of the West Sands supported Phuket team win two bronze and one gold medal. West Sands has helped manage and sponsor the team of local youths since its inception eighteen months ago and the team coach 'Master Jay' is very hopeful of a future Thai Olympic Boxing team member being chosen from the boys.
Joe Mercer was the special guest of the President of Thailand Amateur Boxing Association General Taweep Jantararoj. West Sands also seeks to support other community based projects including the local Marine Turtle Foundation.

Several months have passed since our last set of development photographs and things have really moved along. Whilst the views always have and always will be stunning, we think the newly completed villa kitchens are also very nice!
Also in this latest set of pictures the landscaping around the West Sands Club House is evident giving a good indication of just how lush the flora around the whole development will be.
